3 Myths About Hospice

Myth #1: Hospice is a place.

Reality: Hospice care usually takes place at home, but also in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or residential care facility.

Myth #2: Hospice means that the patient will soon die.

Reality: Hospice care does not mean giving up hope. The earlier a patient receives hospice care, the more opportunity there is to stabilize medical conditions and address other needs.

Myth #3: Patients can only receive hospice care for a limited time.

Reality: The Medicare benefit, and most private insurance, usually pays for hospice care as long as the patient continues to meet the necessary criteria. Patients may come on and off hospice care, and re-enroll in hospice care, as needed.
