Extra Help Paying for Prescription Drugs

The Low Income Subsidy (LIS) "Extra Help" Medication Program:

With the rising costs of medical care you may be one of thousands of seniors looking for “extra help.” That’s why you should know about Medicare’s program to help qualifying seniors pay for prescription medication. It’s called the Low Income Subsidy “Extra Help” Medication Program.

What “Extra Help” Pays for

“Extra Help” will pay for the Part D monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and co-payments related to your Medicare Prescription Drug program.

Can I apply for “Extra Help”?

To qualify, you must be enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan. In most cases, drug costs for 2013 will be no more than approximately $2.65 for each generic/$6.60 for each brand-name covered drug. Your annual income is limited to $17,235 for an individual or $23,265 for a married couple living together. However, even if your yearly income is higher, you still may qualify for the assistance. Your resources are limited to $13,300 for an individual or $26,580 for a married couple living together. Resources include your savings and stocks, but not your home or car or the value of any life insurance you may have.

How to apply for “Extra Help”

You may apply for “Extra Help” via phone, online, or paper application. Online applications are usually processed more quickly, on the average of 15 business days. Always make a copy of your application for follow up purposes.
