It’s MedicAlert Awareness Month!

Tragic or even fatal mistakes can be made in emergency medical treatment if health professionals are unaware that the patient has a special medical condition. For example, a diabetic could be neglected and die because the person was thought to be intoxicated. Or a shot of penicillin could end the life of someone who is allergic to it.

That’s why many people choose to wear a MedicAlert bracelet or necklace to alert others to their condition in the event they are unable to communicate. Medical personnel can call the MedicAlert 24 hour Emergency Hotline and provide the ID number on the back of the ID to get more detailed medical information on the member.

MedicAlert is a non-profit foundation that was created in 1956 by a doctor and his wife after they discovered their teenage daughter had a potentially deadly allergy to tetanus antitoxin. Since then, it has saved the lives of tens of thousands of people. For more information on the services MedicAlert provides visit www.medicalert.org or call 888-643-4298.
