5 Ways to Stop UV Rays

The sun’s UV rays not only damage your skin, but they can also damage your eyes, causing cataracts and macular degeneration. Here’s how to protect yourself.

1. Avoid prolonged sun exposure during the hours of 10am-4pm, when UV rays are the strongest.

2. Wear sunscreen. All it takes is 15 minutes of exposure for UV rays to damage your skin. For best results, use SPF 30 sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside and reapply every two hours.

3. Use sunglasses. UV light is especially dangerous when it is reflected off of water, snow, and pavement. Look for sunglasses that bock out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

4. Wear long sleeve shirts made out of dark, tightly woven fabric for the best skin protection.

5. Wear a hat with a wide brim that goes around your head to protect your face, ears and back of your neck. Tightly woven hats made of canvas are preferable to straw hats that have holes.
