Primary Care

The Importance of a Primary Care Physician

Your primary care doctor plays an important role in your well-being. Your doctor is your personal physician and partner in helping you to stay healthy throughout every stage of life, as well as in diagnosing and treating illnesses and medical conditions that arise.

In a medical emergency, you should immediately go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. But for all other medical attention, your primary care doctor is your first stop. Primary care doctors diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries and, if you need specialty care, will refer you to a medical specialist. Your primary care doctor will stay informed and involved with any medical treatment you require. For these reasons, it's important to choose the right primary care doctor for you and your family.

Choosing the Right Primary Care Doctor

Internist, Family Medicine Practitioner or Pediatrician?

At the Torrance Health IPA, we have three kinds of primary care doctors:

  • Internists who treat adults
  • Pediatricians who treat children up until the age of 21
  • Family medicine practitioners who take care of people of all ages, infancy through senior years

All of our primary care physicians take the time to get to know you and learn as much as they can about your family's health history.

Care provided by Primary Care Doctors

Preventive care. To help you stay healthy, preventive care includes making sure that you are getting the immunizations and screening tests you need at the right time, and providing advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

Treatment of illnesses and injuries. Your primary care physician identifies and treats common medical conditions, evaluates the severity of health complaints, refers you to specialists as needed, treats illnesses and works with you to manage chronic conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure).

Coordinating medical care. Medical care can be complicated, particularly for patients who have one or more chronic medical conditions. Your primary care doctor ensures you see the right doctors at the right times, keeps track of your treatments and medications to be sure one doesn't interfere with another, and communicates with each of your doctors about what's going on with your health.

Primary Care Doctors Maintain Involvement in Your Medical Care

THIPA and Torrance Memorial Medical Center are parts of the Torrance Memorial Health System, which enables constant communication between all physicians and health care providers so you have a fully integrated, collaborative care experience. That means if you see a medical specialist or receive treatment at Torrance Memorial or one of our urgent care centers, you can feel confident that your primary care doctor is informed and involved every step of the way so you get the best health care.
